Reflection of Life

Maurice Calvin Hurd, of Brandywine, Md.

Maurice Calvin Hurd, Sr. son of Authur and Carrie Hurd, was born on June 2, 1944, in Welcome, MD. During his primary years, he attended Waldorf Elementary School. In 1956, Maurice attended that Malcolm Elementary school and in 1963, he graduated from Pomonkey High School.

After graduation, he became employed with the Sanitation Committee in Bladensburg, MD where his pay was $1.50 per hour. Shortly thereafter, he worked for the Labor Union #456. In 1968, Maurice started working at the Moonlight Inn where he was employed by the late Benny Swan with a brief career as a bouncer, bartender, and ultimately he became one of the Managers with his life long friend Robert Marshall. He started a construction career with George Hyman Construction and in 1974, he moved to GIANT Food Construction as a Construction Forman. Maurice was serious about his work, during his 34 years of dedicated service, he fired his son and brother twice. After retiring from Giant he went back as a contractor for about six years.

As a young child Maurice and his siblings attended the Zion Baptist Church.

In October 1966, Maurice was united in holy matrimony to Elizabeth A. Ball (Betty Ann) and from this union, they were blessed to share four children. In 1987, Elizabeth transitioned after their marriage of 21 years.

As a resident of Brandywine, MD for nearly 50 years, Maurice was well known and respected by all of his community until the day God called him home.

Anyone who knew Maurice, knew he was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. Many trash talking sessions were started when his Redskin friends came to start the tension. By his family and friends he was known as the "RIB MASTER." He called people from far and wide to get his special sauce. Maurice was affectionately called "JED CLAMPETT" by his children.

If there was tree to cut, HE CUT IT If there was a car to be fixed, HE FIXED IT His siblings called him "Fred Sanford." He never met any enemies and he was loved by every person that came in contact with him.

On March 9, 2018, after a short illness, Maurice departed this life for eternity. He lives on through his children, Sharon, Michelle, Maurice, Jr. (Block) and Stephen; seven grandchildren, Jaron, Dominique, Teaira, Martice Dequan, Lorenzo and Marcus; and eight great grand children. He also leaves to cherish in memory his siblings, Beulah Shade, Joyce ???, Betty Brooks (Boo Boo), Eunice and Warren (Tank); one uncle, Albert Heard; five aunts, Corada Baucum, Dorris Wiggins, Mildred Mc Kenny, Iretha Heard and Annie Heard; four nephews and one niece.

He also leaves his neighborhood friends Bernard Brooks, Edward Brooks and Joe Buck Walls. Rains, sleet or snow Maurice could count on them. They were the example of real brotherhood and real friendship.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur & Carrie Hurd; wife, Elizabeth Hurd; and brother Arthur (Jerome).
